Affect and Effect

The other day I couldn't remember which of the words to use: "affect" or "effect." So I looked them up in my trusty Rod and Staff English Handbook. Here is the difference:

* Affect - a verb, meaning "to influence"
* Effect - a verb, meaning "to bring to pass"
* Effect - a noun, meaning "result"

The book gave as examples:

Does the new law affect farmers?

The sewing circle effected a plan to include young mothers.

The article in the paper had a good effect.
Yours for proper usage,

Hester
